Square Meterage Rates Don’t Work… Here’s why.

Home > Blog > Square Meterage Rates Don’t Work… Here’s why.

Firstly, you don’t need to know the square meterage rate, it doesn’t work and this blog should give an understanding of why.

Why am I Writing This Blog?

When someone signs up on our website to get access to pricing we make a follow-up call to see how they found this and do a little research on the customer to build better relationships.

One of the questions that comes up repeatedly is “How much is your square meterage rate on… banner, 3mm PVC, 3mm ACM, etc”.

This question is asked because somewhere in modern history, some people decided to sell by the square meter, probably when the most popular width of media was 42 inches (1066mm).  This would allow for bleed and trimming, and the printer could probably live with 66mm of wastage.

So here is why is does not work…

If you watch the video in my blog you will see that vinyl comes in a variety of widths.  The common widths are 1370mm and 1600mm.  You can get narrower widths but they are not as common.  This is largely driven by the most popular wide format printers on the market, for a while this has been HP Latex printers but even their first generations printers were not 1600mm, they were 1550mm, which was driven by the fabric industry as a standard.

So, if the common machines are 1600 wide (banner, poster and self adhesive vinyl) then it would suggest that the common widths of media will be 1100mm, 1370mm and 1600mm.  This allows us to nest and get better us of the material or create wider drops for wallpaper or mount self-adhesive vinyl to 10’x5’ (1550mm x 3050mm) boards.

So here is why is am so f’ f’ f’ frustrated with the question…

We print large format jobs all day for customers who resell our signage and display graphics and in any week I could count on one hand how many 1m x 1m signs and graphics we print!

Hardly any orders 1m x 1m signs… so why ask the rate?  The rate is probably cheaper if you nest your jobs based on the sizes available.

BUT GET THIS!!!

At GraphicWarehouse.co.uk YOU don’t need to work out the cheapest way to nest your jobs because our system does it for you, adds the cutter lines and reduces the waste.

Why do we nest artwork for you?

Because you do not want to pay for the waste, and we don’t want it!
