factory.<\/strong><\/p><p>And like most good journeys, it\u2019s come with its fair share of learning curves, small wins, and\u2014let\u2019s be honest\u2014a few \u201cwhy did we do it that way?\u201d moments.<\/p><p>One of the areas we\u2019ve made real progress in is our 5S shadow boards, and <strong>we thought we\u2019d share a bit about how we got there<\/strong>, with the hope it might be useful to someone else taking their first few steps (or even backtracking a little) on the same right.<\/strong><\/p><p>At first, we tried designing shadow boards in a bit of a bubble\u2014thinking we could map out what every department needed just by watching and guessing. Listening....<\/b><\/p><\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-554e171 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"554e171\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9ca2564\" data-id=\"9ca2564\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-26f875d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"26f875d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p><em><strong>The turning point came when we started talking to the people who actually use the tools every day.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p><strong>Instead of trying to design \u201cthe perfect system&#8221;,<\/strong> <em><strong>we asked operators, techs, and team leads what they needed from a shadow board.<\/strong><\/em> And wow\u2014what a difference.<\/p><\/div><div><strong>Each department had its own quirks and priorities.<\/strong> The production team wanted speed and simplicity. The maintenance crew needed flexibility. The sewing line had super-specific tool shapes and storage needs.<\/div><div><strong><br \/>When we brought all of that into the design process, the boards stopped being generic and started being genuinely useful.<\/strong><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0828c48 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0828c48\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1a9277d\" data-id=\"1a9277d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-10b4239 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"10b4239\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><p><b>A Collaborative Process\nWe approached it like this...<\/b><\/p><\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6986cd5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6986cd5\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e3503e8\" data-id=\"e3503e8\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-020d4c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"020d4c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Talk first, design later \u2013<\/strong> We had chats with each team about what tools they actually use, how often, and what gets in their way. We also looked at where things tend to \u201cgo missing\u201d and why.<\/li><li><strong>Make it visible \u2013<\/strong> We mocked things up with tape and cardboard before committing to anything. Everyone had the chance to tweak, move, or veto ideas.<\/li><li><strong>Start small \u2013<\/strong> We tested the new boards in just one area. There were tweaks, naturally. But the feedback was so positive we quickly started rolling it out elsewhere\u2014with each area shaping their own version.<\/li><li><strong>Keep the conversation going \u2013<\/strong> Just because the boards are on the wall doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re finished. It\u2019s been about creating a culture where improvement isn\u2019t something handed down\u2014it\u2019s something we build together, department by department, person by person. <\/strong><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>We\u2019ve still got plenty of improvements ahead of us, and we\u2019re still learning as we go\u2014but if there\u2019s one big takeaway from our experience, it\u2019s this: if you want a shadow board that really works, don\u2019t design it for your employees.
